Subject Requirements - Assessment

External Assessment - the final IB2 exam

Both SL and HL are required to complete the following:

Paper 1: 4 source analysis questions to be completed in 75 minutes. 25 marks are distributed as follows: 

  • Question 1:  3 marks (identify)

  • Question 2:  4 marks (explain)

  • Question 3:  8 marks (compare and contrast)

  • Question 4: 10 marks (Evaluate)

For the first three questions the knowledge is drawn almost exclusively from the paper. The last question requires your own knowledge and is almost a mini-essay.

Paper 2: Extended Response.

HL, 3 questions each from a different unit, 2 options from each unit - 2 hours and 45 minutes.

SL, 2 questions each from a different unit, 2 options from each unit - 1 hour and 45 minutes.

Each extended response should be in the range of about 800 - 1000 words.

Internal Assessment

Both HL and SL students have to complete an Engagement Activity that results in a 2000 word written report. These are completed in IB2

HL students have to complete two 10 minute Global Political Challenges, which are oral presentations. The first of these is at the end of the IB1 year, the second at the end of IB2

 

The weightings of the course is as follows

Engagement activity -  25%

Paper 1 - 30%

Paper 2 - 45%

HL

Engagement Activity - 20% (10% + 10%)

Global Challenge - 20%

Paper 1 - 20%

Paper 2 - 40%

What do I need to do to be a successful student in Global Politics?

  • To do well in this subject you will need to develop advanced writing skills to be able to complete essays of up to 1000 words in timed conditions - that is in less than one hour.

  • You will need to develop a good understanding of contemporary global politics. You will need to have an accurate and up to date understanding of various case studies such as the Syrian Conflict.

  • You will need to develop a good understanding of the concepts, ideas and theories within the discipline of Global Politics. These will need to be applied to the case studies, essay topics, oral presentations and other assessments that you undertake in this subject.

  • It is expected that you read widely and develop a system of notes and summaries of the material you read in order to imbed your knowledge and understanding as well as assist you in the preparation for assessments.

  • This subject lends itself well to the extended essay that you will undertake in IB2
