The Covenants

In support of the UDHR two international covenants on human rights were adopted by the international community in the mid 1960s. These are the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPRs) and the International Covenant on Economic Social and Cultural Rights (ICESRs). The video below gives an overview of them.

Task. You need to know about both of these covenants, what they contain and how they are enforced. In pairs you are going to role play a journalist interviewing the United Nations Human Rights Commissioner. The journalist will need to find out the following information.

  • The background to the establishment of the relevant covenant

  • How many countries have signed/ratified the covenant

  • What the important articles are

  • What the mechanisms for enforcement are

  • Are the pros and cons of the covenants

​

You will need to present this in video form and would help if it is done as realistically and professional as possible.
